Chicago area residents should prepare for a dramatic temperature swing Saturday as gusty winds drive readings down approximately 20 degrees following overnight thunderstorms, according to NBC 5 Storm Team meteorologists.

Live Doppler 5 showed rain ending around 6:30 a.m. Saturday, though NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Pete Sack said he could not rule out the possibility of stray showers as morning progresses and winds shift.

Temperatures held steady around 60 degrees at approximately 8 a.m., marking what meteorologists expect to be the warmest point of the entire day. Readings will drop to around 50 degrees before falling into the 40s during the afternoon hours, according to Sack.

The temperature plunge comes as southwestern to westerly winds arrive in the afternoon at 15 to 20 miles per hour, with higher gusts possible throughout the day. Clouds will likely persist for most of Saturday, though some breaks in cloud cover may occur around sunset.

Weather conditions will shift again Saturday evening as clouds clear out and winds temporarily ease, according to forecasters. However, breezy conditions will return Sunday morning as the region experiences another weather pattern change.

Sunday will begin with low temperatures around 30 degrees but bring plenty of sunshine to the Chicago area. Wind gusts could again exceed 30 miles per hour, though temperatures will climb to approximately 50 degrees by noon and reach the low 60s by afternoon under mostly sunny skies.

The anticipated high for Sunday is 62 degrees with gusty southwesterly winds continuing throughout the day, according to weather forecasts.

Sunday also marks the beginning of daylight saving time, which officially takes effect at 2 a.m. Residents should remember to set clocks forward either before going to bed Saturday or before waking Sunday morning.

The time change will push sunset to approximately 7 p.m., and Sack said he expects favorable viewing conditions for the evening sky.

The weather pattern will continue evolving into next week, with breezy and warm conditions expected Monday. Temperatures will top out in the upper 60s by afternoon, with the possibility of stray 70-degree readings, according to meteorologists.

Mild conditions will persist Tuesday with highs in the low-to-mid 60s, though storms become possible. Rain will likely arrive Wednesday as cooler air moves into the region, driving highs down to the upper 40s.

The cooling trend will intensify from there, with Thursday’s high reaching only the low 40s. Friday brings another possibility of showers as the chilly pattern continues.

A cold weekend will follow, with the possibility of rain and potentially even snowflakes mixed in by next Sunday, according to extended forecasts.

The dramatic weather swings reflect typical spring patterns in the Chicago area, where rapid temperature changes often accompany shifting wind patterns and storm systems moving through the region.

Residents should plan accordingly for the significant temperature drop Saturday and prepare for continued variable conditions through the coming week as multiple weather systems impact the area.
